NABEYAMA, A. and OGATA, T. Cytological Studies on the Eaterochrounafin Cells in the Intestinal Metaplasia. Tohoku J. exp. Med., 1971, 105 (4),355-363 The enterochromaffin cells (Ec-cells) in the normal and pathological antral mucosa of the human stomach were examined. It was clarified that the Ec-cells are observed only in the mucosa with intestinal metaplasia, and never in the normal mucosa. We tentatively classified the Ec-cells into two types: Ec-1-cells and Ec-‡U-cells. The specific granules in the Ec-I-cells are polymorphous and contain a dense core enclosed by a limiting membrane which fits either tightly or loosely. The Ec-‡U-cells have electron dense and polymorphous granules but do not contain a dense core in the limiting membrane. The ratio of Ec-‡Tcells to Ec-‡U-cells in the antral mucosa with intestinal metaplasia seems to be almost equal in gastric ulcer but smaller in gastric cancer. We propose the hypothesis that the endocrine cells in antral mucosa are changed into intestinal types of endocrine cells in the course of development of the intestinal metaplasia. enterochromaffin cells; gastric mucosa; gastric ulcer; gastric cancer

Distribution of GEP endocrine cells in the gastric mucosa of mice with experimental gastritis.
The aim of this study was to ascertain the morphological changes in the endocrine cell profile in the atrophic mucosa of mice with autoimmune gastritis induced by neonatal thymectomy and administration of carcinogenic chemical, N-methyl-N'-nitroN-nitrosoguanidine (MNNG). Proliferation of argyrophil cells, gastrin (Gl 7, G34) cells in areas of pseudopyloric metaplasia, enteric hormone (GIP, secr...
متن کاملThe cytology of gastric mucosa.
Smears and sections were obtained from various labelled points on the mucosal surface of 25 freshly-excised stomachs, and the appearances were compared. Normal gastric mucosa, intestinal metaplasia, chronic gastritis, and carcinoma could generally be identified from the smears. In a few smears from the edge of peptic ulcers there were abnormal cells which might cause confusion with carcinoma. C...
متن کاملBenign Phyllodes Tumor With Cystic Squamous Metaplasia: A Cytohistological Correlation of a Rare Case
Background: Phyllodes tumors (PTs) are uncommon biphasic fibroepithelial neoplasms of the breast occurring in elderly females with a peak incidence between 45 and 49 years. Depending on various histological criteria, they are subdivided into benign, borderline, and malignant forms. Metaplastic changes occur, but are quite infrequent and cystic squamous metaplasia is ve...
متن کاملAltered distribution of metaplastic Paneth, gastrin and pancreatic acinar cells in atrophic gastritic mucosa with endocrine cell lesions.
The mechanism of progression from gastric endocrine cell hyperplasias (ECHs) to carcinoid tumor (GCT) is still unknown. In these lesions, the distribution of metaplastic Paneth, gastrin and pancreatic acinar cells developing due to consequences of corporal mucosal atrophy has not been investigated in detail. In this study, 33 gastric endoscopic biopsies with endocrine cell lesions were examined...
متن کاملMorphological range of hyperplastic polyps and carcinomas arising in hyperplastic polyps of the stomach.
A morphological range of 67 hyperplastic polyps was studied. They included polyps removed endoscopically and polyps found incidentally in resected stomachs with gastric ulcers and cancer. The hyperplastic polyps were essentially composed of cystic foveolae and pyloric type glands, lined by cells identical to those of the normal gastric mucosa. Thirty one polyps contained other cytological eleme...
